On Neumarkt Square, the Steigenberger overlooks the landmark Frauenkirche and is a convenient walk to all the major central-city attractions. On the site of a building destroyed in the 1945 bombing, the new Hotel de Saxe was opened in 2006.

Behind a façade constructed to blend with the square’s other neo-baroque buildings, its 178 rooms and seven suites are ultra-modern, pleasingly furnished in neutral brown and beige tones, with good-quality wooden furniture, marble bathrooms, and an overall soothing ambiance.

The bar is in the glass-roofed atrium, where a full “tea” with sandwiches and cakes is served on afternoons in the winter. In summer, the Piazza Culinari’s covered terrace in front of the hotel is a pleasant place for reasonably priced drinks and meals, while watching the kaleidoscope of passersby. The excellent Restaurant de Saxe, on the first floor, overlooks the same scene and at night offers an especially romantic view from the restaurant’s balcony. A superb breakfast buffet is served in the same restaurant, where some linger over cappuccino and buttery croissants all morning. And of course there’s also a Fitness and Wellness area to work off all those excess calories.
